Hollywood / Santa Monica Neighborhood Association Yard of the Month June 2023
Winner: 6921 Hammond Ave
Like the Japanese garden at 7119 Santa Fe, 6921 Hammond captures the eye with a spot of color at the front of the garden. In this case, a bird of paradise shrub in full flower directs the eye to the curved border that winds around to the foundation, creating a cottage garden with a riot of flowering shrubs and plants.
These include red oxalis, Hinckley’s columbine, roses, daisies, and Stella d’Oro dwarf daylily, many repeating and self-seeding. A Japanese maple stands tall, waiting to sport red foliage as this spring’s brilliant floral display recedes. The neighborhood resident who suggested the garden through gro.anmsh@ofni noted that the owners are hardworking self-gardeners who always plant using their own design.
Long-time residents and HSM neighborhood supporters, the owners have convincingly demonstrated that an informal cottage-style garden that follows a simple plan can create harmony and beauty with a profusion of different plant materials. Within a basic border design, they plant what they love.
